Founded in Istanbul in the wake of their neighbours the Borusan Philharmonic, the Borusan Quartet followed the masterclasses of the Alban Berg Quartet, the Juilliard Quartet, Joshua Epstein and Maxim Vengerov. In addition to their regular concerts at the Istanbul Opera House, the quartet boasts a booked-out diary, with concert dates around the globe. They have also taken part in a number of festivals - Schleswig-Holstein, Merano, Mozart in Salzburg, Bodensee, Europalia - and performed in such halls as the Zurich Tonhalle, Carnegie Hall, the Berlin Konzerthaus, the Corum in Montpellier, the Metz Arsenal and the Giuseppe Verdi hall of Milan. This album gives the quartet the opportunity to showcase, alongside the Untold quartet by Hasan Uçarsu (born 1965) (which stylishly weaves together several Turkish folk-music themes and unfurls a distinctly Bartókian structure), fundamental works from two composers, the Second by Philip Glass (which was to accompany the stage adaptation of Samuel Beckett's Company, hence the title), and the Fourth by Pēteris Vasks, a magnificently lyrical work written in 1999. The album opens with the short, but no less fundamental, Summa by Arvo Pärt, which riffs on medieval religious music, but in a most modern language. © SM/Qobuz
