The ciaccona (French: chaconne, English: chacony, and other terms were used) was highly popular for the better part of 150 years and has hung on until the present day. Baroque violinist Leila Schayegh, in her enthusiastic and appealing notes to this Glossa release, mentions the idea that the form might have had South American origins, which would likely make it part of the parade of influences Black people have had on the classical tradition. She does well to compile a lot of ciacconas here, for this has not been a common idea, and the pieces shed unusual light on the creativity of individual composers. Bach's big chaconne is not here, but Pachelbel's Canon, which is also a ciaccona, is included, and there are other works by well-known composers such as Purcell and Corelli. However, some of the most delightful pieces are the obscure ones. Sample the hefty ciaccona known only as Senza titolo ("Without Title") by Tomaso Antonio Vitalino, with its intriguing departures from the home key. Schayegh breaks up the ciacconas with a few related pieces, and the entire program flows in an appealing way. Glossa's sound from an old Swiss hotel space is another draw; it is bright but not churchy. This is a highly enjoyable Baroque release for anyone, and its close focus will appeal as well to serious Baroque buffs.
