The Manhattan Love Suicides first album was a thrilling blast of fuzz, feedback, and melody that fought their influences (the Primitives, Shop Assistants, Jesus and Mary Chain) to a bloody draw. The chain saw guitars, sharp as butcher knives hooks, and singer Caroline's bruised glamour were enough to convince even the most jaded old-timer that there was some life left in the old template. Burnt Out Landscapes is more proof that the MLS aren't merely aping their heroes and are on their way to becoming heroes in their own right. The album is a (very generous at 27 tracks) collection of singles, EP tracks, radio sessions, and new songs only available here. It seems pointless to point out the highlights because the quality from beginning to end is so high and the songs are so uniform in sound and energy level. It probably is worth pointing out that the exclusive tracks are among the best on offer, especially the girl group quoting "Johnny Boy" that kicks things off with a boot to the skull and an arrow through the heart. That feeling sums up the band and this collection. They'll steal your heart with a razor blade and a kiss; break your heart and your face at the same time. It's a winning combination that has been proven effective time and time again by some amazing bands. Add the Manhattan Love Suicides to that list and if anyone questions it, just point to Burnt Out Landscapes as exhibit A in your defense.
