Mykki Blanco has surely earned her reputation as a poet. Her second album, Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep is a superb balancing act between esoteric images and a kind of rage which is quite unique to this genre-spanning artist. Her range runs from soul to trap by way of house and R&B. Her voice and lyrics take centre stage on Trust A Little Bit, before collapsing into a cacophony of ideas and sounds on Fuck Your Choice. This album is a clear call for self-affirmation and pride. And there is also a desire to have fun musically, to revisit old-school R&B with her friend Blood Orange on It's Not My Choice, or to lead trap music down new paths on Free Ride. Broken Hearts & Beauty Sleep is travelling lighter than its predecessor Mykki, released in 2016, but it is still a great album. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
