Despite being filed under the “desert rock” category, the band Kel Assouf do not have a clear-cut identity. Yes, their Nigerian frontman and founder Anana Ag Haroun sings in Tamasheq (much like the Saharan nomads) about themes common amongst the Tuaregs, imbued with that “assouf” nostalgia that so often characterizes their songs. But his guitar playing owes as much to his compatriots as it does to international power rock. At his side we find Olivier Penu, a drummer who was born in Belgium (where the group is based) and the Tunisian-born Sofyann Ben Youssef (the man behind the exciting cross-border electronic project Ammar 808) who we find on keyboards and production for this third album. That’s not to say that fans of Tinariwen, Bombino (Anana’s cousin), or Tamikrest won’t love the hybridity of Black Tenere. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
