Is Otto Klemperer's 1957 recording of the "Pastoral" the greatest ever recorded? Despite the stiff competition, it could be. Furtwängler's with the Vienna is a richly imagined fantasy of the "Pastoral" and very, very great. Walter's with the Philadelphia is a superbly played, deeply poetic, and profoundly beautiful "Pastoral" and very, very great. Böhm's with the Vienna is an exquisitely played and elegantly lovely "Pastoral" and very, very great. But despite the competition, Klemperer's may be the greatest. Why? Because only Klemperer captures the "Pastoral"'s sublimely elemental earthiness, the sense that it grew up out of the earth to rise to heavens, the at-once intangible and yet still palpable feeling that all life is transcendent and that size is merely a matter of scale. How does he do it: by getting the tempos right. Klemperer's opening Allegro ma non troppo is lively but not too fast, his Andante con mosso is relaxed but not somnambulant, and his closing Allegretto is an ideally realized walking hymn to God and all creation. And the rest of the Beethoven recordings on the disc are just as great. Klemperer's 1957 The Creatures of Prometheus Overture is ineffably effervescent, his 1957 Coriolan Overture is the whole tragic drama of man in eight tempestuous minutes, and his 1957 recording of the Overture plus three pieces from the incidental music of Egmont with soprano Birgit Nilsson is arguably the best ever made. This is as great a disc of Beethoven recordings as there is in this world. And EMI's 2003 remastering is magnificent.
