Ben Davis plays smart yet introverted pop songs, while Aimee Argote, as Des Ark, plays intricate, baroque indie rock on this split CD. The two artists unite for a finale featuring two songs performed with a 20-piece orchestra, but it's the subtle blending of their contrasting styles that provides most of the interest here. Davis's "Last Drive" has some of the subterranean mystery of Argote's best songs, while her "Fall of the Skorts," bafflingly sung in a Dickensian British accent, has an imaginative chamber pop feel a world away from the indie rock basement.
