Back to the 80's is a single by Norwegian/Danish band Aqua. The song, written by band members, Søren Rasted and Claus Norreen, and produced by Rasted for their second Greatest Hits album, marks the band's comeback after a seven-year absence — the last single We Belong to the Sea was released in 2001. The song, first performed live on the 2008 'Goodbye To The Circus Tour', was called 'Those Were The Days' and its lyrics were different from the current studio version. For the international release of the single, the band decided, out of respect for the late Michael Jackson, to change the line 'When M&M was just a snack and Michael Jackson's skin was black' from the original Danish release to ' When M&M was just a snack and Arnie* told us 'I'll be back' ' (* in reference to Arnold Schwarzenegger).
The lyrics of the song obviously refer to the 1980s with bands from that time such as Bananarama, Breakfast Club or Twisted Sister, actors such as Tom Cruise, David Hasselhoff, and characters from the TV series Mister T, Rocky or even Rubik's cube toys, Barbie... Back to the 80's was released on 25 May 2009 in Denmark and Norway as the lead single from Greatest Hits and then internationally in September 2009 ; next in France on download platforms, 2 November 2009, and on CD single on 9 November : France was the only country receiving a CD release including the original song and two additional remixes. The success of the new song Back to the 80's was such that a new album was announced for 2010. Aqua's lightness and humour are no doubt part of this winning return.
