Among the myriad of contemporary musicians in the neo-classical, stripped-down, meditative piano genre, Jean-Michel Blais at least makes an attempt to take a more diversified path through the soundscape. The introductory prelude (murmurs, absinthe), both in terms of the melodic melisma and the presence of “non-electric” instruments, seems to adhere to a current pop trend where the simplicity of emotion doesn’t impede imaginative writing. The evanescent ramblings of Susanne Sundfør might even come to mind. But, within the discourse put forward by aubades' 11 tracks, it’s when the piano forms the very heart of the music (if you build it, they will come, absinthe) that Blais’ message is poetically conveyed with genuine sincerity. © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
