This whirlwind of an album could well be labelled « more of the same » from Billy Talent, but that’s no bad thing. Immutable, unwilling to compromise, and totally relentless in their approach to their art, the band describes this album as something deeply personal, full of individual stories but with wider messages at its heart. Anthemic tracks like « Louder than the DJ » unabashedly hark back to a simpler, wilder time when rock concerts were king, rather than just something that happened before a DJ set… The nostalgia’s understandable because this album is a real head banger and, as the lyrics imply (“we’re louder than the DJ … and “faster than the airwaves”), deserves to be heard live. « Horses & Chariots » is emblematic of the kind of climactic, driven, fist pumping energy that Billy Talent delivers time and again, as a track that showcases the punchy lyrics and gritty harmonies that have become the band's trademark. All in all, « Afraid of Heights », is a return to form for this veteran group and is set to be a fan pleaser, if not a critical success. Each song is a rallying cry to the alter of old school rock: “still got the fire left in our bones, we’re not gonna pack up and go”.
