While making their first album, G Flip's Georgia Flipo was also in the middle of their first real relationship, so it makes sense that About Us gives listeners diary-like glimpses into the romance that shaped them and their music. Their breakthrough single "About You" appears here and remains one of their finest and most vulnerable songs, with Flipo's voice ringing out over distant, distorted synths that convey how far away their lover is but how present they are in their heart. "About You" is a microcosm of About Us' mood and story, but there's not much that's small about the album. "Lover" kicks things off with big-hearted, full-throated pop, while Ariel Rechtshaid's production on "I Am Not Afraid" transplants the song from its bedroom origins into the anthemic pop landscape of the late 2010s. Similarly, "Stupid," which Flipo collaborated on with songwriter Justin Tranter, recalls the raw, confessional style of Tove Lo as it captures a connection so strong -- and so volatile -- that even arguments seem romantic. Sometimes, About Us fits into the era's pop sound a little too well: "Bring Me Home" is an unabashedly sentimental ballad that feels and sounds familiar. More often, though, Flipo finds ways to give About Us more personality whenever their tales of lust and heartache could become generic, whether it's the sparkly keyboard that elevates "Killing My Time" or the breezy vulnerability of "Drink Too Much." By the time the album closes with the happily ever after of "2 Million," Flipo proves that in love and in their music, they're never less than fully committed -- and that's what makes About Us a promising debut.
