Do punks age well? That's rather the metaphysical question that the Melvins seek to answer with each new album, and A Walk With Love and Death, with its 23 tracks, is no exception. While the group was formed in the early 80s in Montesano, in the rainy state of Washington, it was never really 100% punk rock. With the odd nod to Black Sabbath's metal, or even to much more experimental stuff, Buzz Osbourne's band has always swum in the mixed waters of a muscular, often tortured and cerebral rock'n'roll. That's the rock that fascinated the grunge scene and the young Kurt Cobain, who as the story goes, learned guitar with Osbourne... Twenty or more albums later, the Melvins still imperiously refuse to ape younger acts. Instead, in this double album, they offer multi-layered compositions, which are impressive and thick with suppressed rage. In short: they're doing what they've always done. The fans of their early works will love it. Others will enjoy the tsunami of rhythms and electric fuzz of an influential group whose aura remains underground and confidential. © CM/Qobuz
