Recorded between 1944 and 2013, the performances in this eight-CD set from Harmonia Mundi span the richest years of the Orchestre National de France, in repertoire that reflects French traditions in 19th and 20th century music. The roster of conductors is an honor roll, including such greats as Charles Münch, Paul Paray, Carl Schuricht, Paul Kletzki, André Cluytens, Leonard Bernstein, Lorin Maazel, Charles Dutoit, Claudio Abbado, and many more who led the orchestra over its 80 years as a major orchestra. Most of the Romantic and early modern pieces will be quite familiar, including Beethoven's Coriolan Overture, Wagner's Prelude to Tristan und Isolde, Mahler's Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen, Strauss' Till Eulenspiegels lustige Streiche, Debussy's Nocturnes, Stravinsky's Le Sacre du printemps, and several others, though there are more modern works by Dutilleux, Messiaen, Berio, and Xenakis that show the orchestra's experimental side. Of course, these recordings also reflect the technological advances and recording limitations of their times, so the earliest analog recordings have a compressed sound that marks them as historical recordings, while the later analog and digital recordings are increasingly detailed and pristine.
