The Davis Sisters
The group was founded by Ruth "Baby Sis" Davis in Philadelphia. Other members included Alfreda, Audrey, and Thelma Davis; Imogene Greene; Curtis Dublin on piano; Jackie Verdell, lead vocalist. They recorded for the Savoy label until 1962. Verdell recorded secular sides for Peacock 1961-1964. Though a quintet, they sounded like a small choir with their full sound. Four members died in separate but tragic fashions. One was burned to death. Ruth died in 1970, while still a young woman, after fighting diabetes, liver disease, and kidney disease.
