New Russia State Symphony Orchestra
The State Symphony Orchestra Novaya Rossiya, or New Russian State Symphony Orchestra, has achieved a distinctive sound under the leadership of its principal conductor since 2002, violist Yuri Bashmet. The orchestra has an unusual structure in which several other conductors have contributed to its artistic development.
The State Symphony Orchestra Novaya Rossiya was founded in 1990, at the direction of what was then the Russian regional government, the RSFSR, of the Soviet Union. The orchestra survived the transition to non-Communist rule and began to develop substantially under the leadership of Yuri Bashmet, a veteran violist who had taken up conducting in the 1980s and had already served as music director of several top-level small ensembles. He had a ready pool of musical recruits from which he could draw. "Under Bashmet's leadership," the group's website asserts, "the orchestra acquired its own unique manner of playing, which is distinguished by creative freedom, audacious interpretations and startlingly inspired performances, all combined with a full, rich sound." He has also brought the orchestra annually to his own Yuri Bashmet Winter Music Festival in the city of Sochi. Bashmet has attracted a large group of Russian and international collaborators, including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Deborah Voigt, and Montserrat Caballé.
In addition to appearing in virtually every Russian city of any size, the orchestra has toured western Europe, India, and Japan. Under Bashmet, the orchestra has premiered the works of many prominent composers including Sofia Gubaidulina, Alfred Schnittke, and Edison Denisov. The orchestra has several other conductors: Denis Vlasenko and Freddy Cadena have the title of conductor, not assistant or associate conductor. Also, frequently associated with the group is conductor Alexander Walker, who has led the group in a series of recordings for the Naxos label. Many of these have included music by composer Havergal Brian; in 2019, under Walker, the orchestra released a recording featuring Brian's Symphony No. 7 and Symphony No. 16.
