Hello Yello

Oakland, California-based trio Hello Yello make hazy grunge pop with little regard for the confines of genre. The band's sound is based heavily in guitar-forward '90s alternative pop influences, but hints of the bandmembers' R&B backgrounds come through in moments of their 2023 debut full-length, Good Intentions. Hello Yello is made up of brothers Dylan and Jaden Wiggins and their childhood friend Martin Rodrigues. The brothers are the sons of D'Wayne Wiggins, leader of R&B group Tony! Toni! Toné!, who had significant success in the late '80s and through the '90s. This background put the brothers on a musical path from an early age, and before forming Hello Yello, they had been in a band with Kehlani and worked in various supporting roles on tours with H.E.R. and Zendaya. In the late 2010s, the Wiggins brothers teamed up with Rodrigues to form new band SMSHNG HRTS, a trio that continued the melodic R&B sound the Wigginses had been active in until that point. This group eventually morphed into Hello Yello in 2018 and dropped the R&B direction in favor of a more grunge-influenced and guitar-heavy style. Their first few singles, "Feel That Again," "Sins," and "I Don't Care," were slices of melodic, psychedelic alt-rock, and they were collected along with a few new songs on 2019 EP Love Wins. Also in 2019, the band toured with Clairo and Beabadoobee and released two-song project My Life as a Teenage Robot. It would be several years before the band resurfaced with their first full length album, 2023's Good Intentions.
