Charles Cole

Conductor and organist Charles Cole directs the Schola Cantorum of the London Oratory School. He has toured widely with that choir and performed at major events in Britain. Cole's first musical experiences came as a chorister at Westminster Cathedral. He earned a music scholarship at Ampleforth College, a day and boarding school, and then attended Exeter College, Oxford University, as an organ scholar (a musician who performs at university services and events in exchange for tuition discounts). He went on to serve as an organ scholar at Westminster Cathedral. Cole assisted in choral performances at several major events. He directed the children's choir in a 400th-anniversary performance of Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610, collaborating with the Monteverdi Choir and its director, John Eliot Gardiner, at the Royal Albert Hall during the BBC Proms festival. For a time, he was director of the Schola Cantorum at the Cardinal Vaughan Memorial School in London. In 2012, Cole became director of the Schola Cantorum of the London Oratory School (also known as the London Oratory School Schola or London Oratory School Schola Cantorum). He holds the title of Assistant Director of Music at the school and also conducts the London Oratory Junior Choir. He appeared on several recordings as chorus master or choir director, including the soundtrack of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Pt. 1, in 2010. Cole was involved in several capacities with the London visit of Pope Benedict XVI, playing the organ at the Hyde Park prayer service with 80,000 in attendance, and conducting the Schola Cantorum in a private audience with the Pope. He has led the Schola Cantorum on tour in Italy, Germany, Spain, and the U.S. In the latter country, he has been active as an educator, serving on the faculty of the Church Music Association of America as a teacher of Gregorian chant and choral direction and serving at colloquium events in several cities. As an organist, Cole has performed at major London cathedrals and at several churches internationally, including Notre-Dame in Paris (as part of its 850th-anniversary celebrations), St. Catherine's Church in St. Petersburg, Florida, and the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City, Utah. Cole and the Schola Cantorum released the albums Sacred Treasures of Christmas and Sacred Treasures of Spain on the Hyperion label in 2020. They returned in 2024 with Sacred Treasures of Venice.
