Ashley Bathgate
Cellist Ashley Bathgate is a prominent performer of avant-garde music, both in ensembles and increasingly often as a solo player. She was a longtime member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
Bathgate was born in Saratoga Springs, New York, in 1985, and as her solo career became better established, she returned to that area to live. She began cello lessons with Rudolf Doblin, former principal cellist of the Buffalo Philharmonic, and then at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs with Ann Alton. Bathgate was a member of the Empire State Youth Orchestra and won the Lois Lyman Concerto Competition twice, performing cello concertos by Saint-Saëns and Schumann at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall. As an undergraduate, Bathgate studied at Bard College in upstate New York with Luis Garcia-Renart, performing the concertos of Eugen d'Albert and Samuel Barber under the baton of the school's president, Leon Botstein. She went on for graduate studies at Yale University, where her teacher was Aldo Parisot. Bathgate won Yale's concerto competition in 2008. The following year, she became a member of the Bang on a Can All-Stars, remaining with the group until 2019. In 2010, she made her recording debut, appearing on the album Martin Bresnick: Everything Must Go, and she made several recordings with the Bang on a Can All-Stars.
Bathgate's stint with that group oriented her more toward contemporary music as she learned about musical electronics and collaborated with musicians from outside the classical realm. She joined other contemporary music groups, including HOWL, Bonjour, and the duo TwoSense (with pianist Lisa Moore). In 2015, Bathgate performed with dancer Lil Buck in the world premiere of the performance project "What Moves You" at South Carolina's Spoleto Festival and premiered a cello concerto, Stories for Ocean Shells, composed for her by Kate Moore, in Utrecht, Netherlands. The following year, she made her solo recording debut with that work, released on the Cantaloupe label. She also made several recordings of avant-garde music for New Amsterdam Records; one of those was ASH, written for Bathgate by the composer collective Sleeping Giant. She moved to New Focus Recordings for the 2023 album 8-Track.
