The Shys second record, YOU’LL NEVER UNDERSTAND THIS BAND LIKE I DO, opens with the remarkable sleight-of-hand that is the string-driven, just-plain-pretty instrumental “Spanish Village By the Sea,” offering newbie listeners little hint of the firestorm to follow. “The Hangman” opens softly with a gentle guitar riff before launching into a grimy glam-metal-meets-garage anthem. The sharp album continues in that fashion, pairing Tom Petty-style storytelling songwriting with an appealing bar-rock sound falling somewhere between the raucous Southern blues of Lynyrd Skynyrd and the fuzzy power pop of Badfinger.
