Is this a revolution in the making for DJ-Kicks? For the first time in its history, the famous compilation series enlists Theo Parrish, whose contribution consists solely of unreleased tracks. The format of the title is also new—it’s not just called DJ-Kicks: Theo Parrish; it also contains the subtitle Detroit Forward. Parrish, who grew up in Chicago before becoming one of the most respected members of the Detroit house/soul/jazz scene with his label Sound Signature, has chosen to ‘defy tradition’ by highlighting lesser-known musicians from the Great Lakes region instead of the usual suspects.
His mix on this DJ-Kicks is undeniably versatile, embracing a wide spectrum of styles from hip-hop and house to jazz, soul and R&B. Every track features that soulful and melancholic touch inherited from the J-Dilla/Moodymann/Amp Fiddler trio. Saxophonist De'Sean Jones opens the compilation. The Detroit-made musician is a particular fan of Marcus Belgrave, and has previously played with the likes of Omar S and Makaya McCraven. He drops a ton of groove on ‘Pressure’, as well as the two other tracks he appears on.
We then visit jazz (‘Simba's Theme’ by Donald Lee Roland II), R&B (‘When the Sun Falls’ by Meftah, with that bass loop that’ll keep you glued to your sofa for the full seven minutes), spoken word (‘Chasing Delerium’ by KESSWA) and mystical dub (‘Hudson’s’ by Raj Mahal). There’s even jazz/techno fusion on ‘Wind Drifts’ - a track by Jon Dixon, the conductor of Galaxy 2 Galaxy (the live version of the legendary techno collective Undergound Resistance). The Detroit sound is crystallised by the deep synth riff of ‘Real Deal’, repeated over trance music by the master Theo Parrish (who’s also at the helm of the live version of Ian Fink's ‘Moonlite’, which undeniably constitutes the high point of this quality compilation). © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
