For most fans, the 16-track Anthology will simply be too much Strawberry Alarm Clock to digest, since the band rarely hit the heights of "Incense and Peppermints." Most of the rest of the album consists of period pieces like "Sit with the Guru," "Rainy Day Mushroom Pillow," "They Saw the Fat One Coming," "The Birdman of Alkatrash," and the three-part suite "Black Butter," which are entertaining as artifacts, but aren't particularly good songs. Nevertheless, it's hard to imagine anyone assembling a more comprehensive overview than Anthology, even if it is lacking any cuts from the Beyond the Valley of the Dolls soundtrack. It's a near-definitive retrospective.
