About Playlist

Founded by charismatic frontman Shane MacGowan in King's Cross, London, in 1982 as Pogue Mahone - anglicisation of the Irish Gaelic póg mo thóin, meaning 'kiss my arse' - the Pogues took Ireland's musical heritage around the world with their punk energy, blending electric guitars with traditional Irish instruments such as the tin whistle, banjo, cistrum, mandolin and accordion. The genre is referred to as Celtic punk, and its themes include politics, religion, alcohol and the working class. With seven studio albums between 1984 and 1996, the band left their mark on the Irish music scene. Here is the best of the Pogues in 40 songs! Photo © Steve Rapport/Getty Images
