About Playlist
Joseph Anthony Jacobi Passalacqua was born in New Jersey in 1929, to a family originally from Sicily. He grew up mainly in Pennsylvania, and got his first guitar at the age of 9. By 14 he was performing in small jazz bands. Pass fell into a hellish drug addiction, however, and was even imprisoned in the 50s. He began recording in the early 60s, notably with Gerald Wilson, Bud Shank and Les McCann. He was discovered by the influential Norman Granz, who signed him to Pablo Records and released a series of solo "Virtuoso" records, followed by a trio with Oscar Peterson (piano) and Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen (double bass). As well as playing with all the jazz greats of his day, including Benny Carter, Milt Jackson, Herb Ellis, Zoot Sims, Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Count Basie, he recorded no fewer than 6 magnificent albums as a duo with the great Ella Fitzgerald, at the end of the jazz legend's career. He played guitar until the very end of his life. His last concert took place just 16 days before his death from liver cancer in 1993. Joe Pass leaves an immense legacy to all guitarists, who have compared him to a jazz Paganini, in admiration of his virtuosity and the clarity of his touch.
