About Playlist

Frank Sinatra was arguably one of the most important figures in 20th century popular music. His only rivals seemed to be Bing Crosby, Elvis Presley or the Beatles. In a career spanning over sixty years, he has stayed the course, adapting himself and his audience without ever denying the foundations of his art. He emerged during the era of the great swing bands (Harry James, Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey) in the 1930s and 1940s. In the 50s, without ever losing his charm, he was face the rise of rock'n roll and rhythm'n blues, and stood up to the pop of the 60s and the soul of the 70s until the 80s when he became a world icon, the king of crooners. He never left the top of the bill. His first hit was in 1942, "Night and Day". In 1994, Frank Sinatra was still making records with sales in the millions ("Duets II"). Ol' Blue Eyes' trademark was the interpretation of the great Broadway standards of the 20s, 30s and 40s, songs by Jerome Kern, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter or Richard Rodgers. On record, on stage, in movies and on TV shows, he demonstrated the durability of these songs. Frank Sinatra finally retired in 1995 at the age of 80, and died of a heart attack less than three years later. The extent of his success, which lasted more than fifty years, is astonishing. His work was divided into three main periods: the Columbia years (1943-1952), the Capitol years (1953-1962), and the Reprise years (1960-1981), amplified by numerous appearances in films, TV shows, and various other recordings. He was a film star, an often controversial personality with a sulphurous reputation, and Frank Sinatra sometimes made us forget his true musical talents, which were the source of his fame. He was able to carry and embody the greatest American songs, perpetuating them for future generations. © JMP/Qobuz Photo © Silver Screen Collection / Getty
