About Playlist
When Booker T. Jones produced Bill Withers' 1971 debut Just As I Am (featuring “Ain’t No Sunshine”), he described the singer as "the poet Stax never had." Born William Harrison Withers, Jr., on July 4, 1938, Bill Withers infused his own art of storytelling into soul music. After serving in the navy for nearly a decade (having enlisted when he was 17), Withers relocated to Los Angeles in 1967 to begin his music career. Even with the success of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” Withers still held on to his day job, wary of the music industry’s mercurial nature. He'd continue his storied career with hits like “Lean on Me”, “Just the Two of Us”, “Grandma’s Hands”, “Use Me” and “Lovey Day,” earning three Grammy awards and induction into both the Songwriters and Rock and Roll Halls of Fame.
With his songs serving as a source of samples for rappers like Tupac, Eminem, DJ Jazzy Jeff & the Fresh Prince, covers for R&B singers Luther Vandross and Diana Ross, and inspiration for rockers like Mick Jagger and Lenny Kravitz, and featuring prominently in movies like Jackie Brown and Lean on Me, Bill Withers sang to the hearts of all music lovers. His distinctive, velvet voice will continue to be heard for generations to come. Bill Withers died from heart complications at age 81 on March 30, 2020.
