Mumford & Sons’ Ted Dwane offers his choice of Led Zeppelin highlights – recounting his top 10 John Paul Jones bass moments. “What makes JPJ such an incredible bass player is being able to mix heavy rock with such held back melodic lines. But I don’t even need to explain, just have a listen”.

Led Zeppelin: 50 Years of Rock

by Jean-Pierre Sabouret

In 2018, Led Zeppelin celebrated their 50th birthday, but the only "present" on offer is a beautiful book which will come out on sale in Autumn. After having made their mark on the history of rock in just 12 years, Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones have often reunited on stage and in the studio after the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980, with varying degrees of success. Let's take a look back at Led Zep's different comebacks, which we hope might throw up some nice ideas for a really good birthday concert...

As improbable as a new reunion might seem, even with Robert Plant in a good mood, Led Zeppelin is such that there'll never be any need for flashy showmanship. The three survivors can make up their minds from one day to the next. Who would dare to tell them, "that's impossible?" Page, it's well known, is the most up for it: "I'd love to take up my role again; I've done it several times before and loved it. I'd even like to try out some new compositions on Led Zeppelin that I've got up my sleeve. But oddly, we haven't been talking about a reunion at all." John Paul Jones, back in his Crooked Vultures days, had said that he would be ready to get back into his old outfit, even without Plant: "When Robert told us that he didn't want to carry on after the concert at the O2, Jimmy and I tried to form a new group. People said we were just trying to do Led Zeppelin without Robert Plant, but that wasn't true. We just wanted to set up a new group, completely different, and with new pieces. We spent days rehearsing in the studio, but Jimmy and I didn't agree about the choice of singer."

And so, up until December 31st, anything could happen. And what if they wound up deciding to get back together "too late" in 2019? Who would complain? For now, after bringing out a vinyl collection containing unreleased mixes of Rock and Roll and Friends for Record Store Day on 21 April last year, they have agreed to hold a "discussion" meeting, and to bring out a huge book of 368 pages, comparable to the Beatles' massive Anthology. It's called Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin, and will come out in October with Reel Art Press.
