"The Blue Hour" is the moment between the end of the night and the daybreak, when one can see it appear before it has risen: this little breach through time allow us to foresee. Marianne Piketty and the Concert Idéal gather several works written by visionary composers: the mystical chants of Hildegard von Bingen, known for having experienced visions and Hartmann’s Concerto Funebre which announces the horrors of the nazis. Philippe Hersant and Dmitri Shostakovich complement the programme as their works echoes to these musical visions. After the success of "Le Fil d’Ariane", Marianne Piketty and Le Concert Idéal continue their exploration of time as they unite these works overthe ages, for a prophetic recording. © Evidence

Even from their album cover in which the two musicians are running through the ferns, it’s evident that violinist Fanny Robilliard and pianist Paloma Kouider are a charming duo. The image, which is perhaps anecdotal, is conjured up at the beginning of their latest album when listening to “Mid leidenschaflichem Ausdruck” (With passionate expression). It runs through the entire initial movement of Robert Schumann’s First Sonata for Violin and Piano, premiered by Ferdinand David and Clara on the piano during a celebratory “Schumann Week” in Leipzig, in 1852. This uplifting album has been designed and dedicated entirely to the love and friendship that united the Schumann couple and the young Brahms. It also features the work of Albert Dietrich, the third member of this trio of composers who composed the F-A-E Sonata but who is often forgotten. That particular sonata was written for Joseph Joachin and was a musical cryptogram based on his motto in life, ‘Frei aber einsam’ (‘Free but alone’). At its premiere, with Clara on the piano once again, Joachim had to match each composer to their movement, which he managed to do without a moment’s hesitation. As is well known, Clara was always at the heart of these friendly interchanges. It is only fitting, therefore, to find her at the centre of this album which features the splendid Three Romances for Violin and Piano, Op. 22, whose movements have been divided among the works of the other composers. Among them is also the benevolent Joseph Joachim, whose memory is echoed in all of the works of this beautiful album. © François Hudry/Qobuz

Michael Fine’s new record tells the story of five quintets, starring five wind soloists, mingling together with a string quartet, avoiding, answering each other. Michael Fine, who is widely acknowledged both as a producer and composer, explores in his quintets the bonds that these instruments share. Michael Fine proves here his indubitable artistry, as he moves with equal ease in chamber music and orchestral music, displaying the same genuineness and simplicity that forge the strength of his works. © Evidence

For her first record, Adélaïde Ferrière sheds light on the contemporary percussion. As a remarkable percussionist, and nominated for a "Victoire de la Musique" award in 2017, she brings out the surprising features of her instruments for an album and a programme that perfectly suits her: radiant, powerful and striking. Whether she chooses Xenakis or Hurel, Adélaïde Ferrière keeps displaying grace and a spectacular virtuosity: her playful performance is a delight, as much as it is an ode to rhythm and verve. Contemporary music is more alive than ever. © Aparté

This recording does not only honor the beauty and the magnificence of the instrument, it is also, indeed, a tribute to the works that forged its history. Fascinated by the organ since he was a child, Jae-Hyuck Cho chose, for this album, the Great Organ of the Madeleine in Paris, whose superb timbre still exerts its magnetism and power over composers and artists. Right next to that mythical instrument stands Johann Sebastian Bach and his work, which, from the Toccata BWV 565 to Fantasy and Fugue on a BACH theme, imbues this program. Jae-Hyuck Cho sets his playing approach on a clear lineage that widely acknowledges the past and its figures, but also looks forward. Far from restricting to the limits of musical tradition, Cho offers Pahdo, a work that he commissioned to the Korean composer Texu Kim. With such a vision, musical history is an everlasting ongoing story that keeps grounding in its roots. © Evidence

For her first solo recording, Alexandra Luiceanu designed a Russian and romantic program that echoes intimate roots. It is a kind of homage to childhood where music resonates like a reminiscence of a primal language, forever present and understood. Fascinating and mysterious, the disc is entitled Matriochka because the works follow one another like so many faces of Romantic Russia: the sad smile of Mussorgsky, the painful intensity of Rachmaninov, the voluptuousness of Erdely, the tenderness of Ivanov. They all come alive thanks to the richness of the harp’s timbres. Alexandra Luiceanu depicts the many facets of the Russian soul like those cute Russian dolls one after another. Her virtuosity sounds natural in these original pieces and transcriptions. Thus, effacing itself behind the music, the harp becomes poetry. © Evidence/Little Tribeca

After 40 years of activities, more than 50 recordings and some 1000 concerts, the Ensemble Gilles Binchois still develop its inquiring generosity. Dominique Vellard and his musicians make all eras become contemporary. Indeed, if the core of its concerns is somewhere between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Ensemble sang everything from Gregorian chant to the religious repertoire of the nineteenth century. Today they guide our ears towards the shores of the Mediterranean, where an intense artistic vitality grew between the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. After Machaut’s model, the composers attached to the court of Avignon, Barcelona and Cyprus, show ingenuity and imagination: their motets and masses are the ground of rhythmic and melodic finds. To draw a complete portrait the Ensemble Gilles Binchois perform pieces of plain-song and instrumental compositions with two vielles and a medieval mandolin. First milestone of its 40th anniversary, this new record lets the South sun shine thanks to the voices of its singers and the timbre of the ancient strings. © Evidence

In his first recording, Pianist Jean-Paul Gasparian had shown a healthy technique that is essential to play the music of Russian giants. But his strong play is also sensible. In his second disc that is now dedicated to Chopin, the young performer confirms these qualities. Especially in the four Ballads, true bravura pieces in which Jean-Paul Gasparian never fails. And if he shows rigor, he also gives himself the lyricism and beauty of these pages, from Nocturnes to Waltzes and Polonaises. His elegant expression and full sound make this new album a second essential milestone in the discography of the young pianist and more generally in that of Chopin. © Little Tribeca

Such as Theseus unrolls the thread given by Ariadne to find his way through the labyrinth, Marianne Piketty tries to find her way through the labyrinth of time by inventing a path from Baroque to present. She thus gives shape and life to Ariadne by crossing the voices of Pietro Locatelli and Alex Nante. The myth has indeed inspired and still inspires artists. Violinist and composer Locatelli, as prodigious as Vivaldi, set to music the abandonment of Ariadne: "Il Pianto d'Arianna" expresses the pain and the freedom at the same time in a virtuoso way, reflective of the power of imagination. Marianne Piketty is an audacious music-broker: she gives substance to this time journey by reinventing the relevant form of the concert, be it live or recorded. With the musicians of her ensemble, named Le Concert Idéal, she tries to realize a dream that this new album concretizes! © Aparté

The scores of composer Michael Fine are born from his improvisations on the piano and are nourished by his travels and his readings: his music derives from a poetic imagination and carries therefore lots of visual evocations. From Korea and its palaces (At the Gate) to Scotland and the writer Alexander McCall Smith (Brother Fox), the world and its landscapes pass by over the seasons (Seasonal Rites) as you listen to it. A sound immersion all the more successful that Michael Fine is also a Grammy-winning producer for his expertise in sound recording. What’s more, as himself a performer, Michael Fine has written music for musicians. And this recording is the faithful testimony of a collective adventure where musicians share their pleasure to play and then offer it to the public. © Evidence

Twenty years of Russian piano: that's what we're being offered by the young pianist Jean-Paul Gasparian in his first - much-remarked-upon and very remarkable - discographic work. Gasparian starts in 1897 with Scriabin's Second Sonata (also known as the Sonata Fantasy), still strongly redolent of Chopin, but already showing a few of those harmonic equivocations which were so dear to the mystical composer). And then another Second Sonata, this one by Prokofiev in 1912 - with the "motoric", wild aspect very much to the fore. The pianist has made the very wise decision not to overdo the score's brutality, and carefully avoids drowning the work in noisome pedal effects. In the same year, 1912, Scriabin wrote his Three Études Op. 65 in the style of his late maturity, which shines through on Poem of Ecstasy: here again, the soloist opts for transparency, allowing the listener to really follow the harmonic and thematic content - if we can really give the name "themes" to these snatched vignettes, these stitched-together scraps, these ferocious sallies which sound like calls to musical revolt. The album opens with nine Études-tableaux Op. 39 by Rachmaninov, written in 1917, which mix the technical side of the étude with evocative art; deliberately imprecise, the composer never prescribes a programme, providing every listener and pianist with a blank canvas to fill as they see fit. To be sure, the "Isle of the Dead" element breaks out most fully in the second étude, in particular with the deathlessly evocative scraps of the Dies irae... In any case, let us welcome Jean-Paul Gasparian to the great European stage, after his short-notice stint as a stand-in for Zacharias in Germany, and whose career is unfolding with speed and confidence. © SM/Qobuz

By joining forces in a violin and piano duo, Fanny Robilliard and Paloma Kouider succeed in expressing perfect harmony between their two personalities, much like they had done as chamber musicians in Trio Karénine. Conceived with subtle tastes tinted with originality, their 2017 debut album features the very best sonatas of Debussy and Reval. The album sheds a new light on their works without debasing them and provides us with an alternative outlook on the masterpieces of these two giants of French music from the early nineteenth century. In the midst of the First World War, a sickened and diminished Debussy demonstrated his ‘Frenchness’ by composing his Sonata for violin and piano. The sonata paid homage to the 18th century through exhibiting the composer’s fantastic and imaginative side while communicating a sense of intense modernity, void of parody or pastiche. Weary of the classical reputation attributed to him, Ravel composed his Sonata for violin and piano (n°2) in the 1920s under the influence of the jazz that he had discovered in New York in the company of George Gershwin. Enamoured by classical culture, Karol Szymanowski conceived at the same time her three Mythes poems, a kind of sonata in disguise inspired by ambiant impressionism. On a completely different note, Reynaldo Hahn’s Nocturne works to skilfully weave together feeling of Antiquity and “American” modernity. © François Hudry/Qobuz
