Stardust
Composed of Thomas Bangalter (of Daft Punk fame), DJ Alan Braxe, and vocalist Benjamin Diamond, Stardust is a French house music supergroup known for their 1998 hit single, “Music Sounds Better With You.” The track, which features a sample of Chaka Khan’s 1981 single “Fate,” spent a couple of weeks at the top of both the UK Dance and Billboard’s US Dance Club Songs charts. It was also very successful in Europe, where it topped the charts in countries like Spain and Greece. The song’s origins can be traced back to the mid-90s, when the trio performed a live set at the Rex Club in Paris. Shortly after the show, they laid down the instrumental lines at Bangalter’s Daft House home studio, over which Diamond sang the mantra-like lyrics. The single was released via Bangalter’s Roulé label in 1998 and was certified platinum in the UK and silver in France. The video for the song, directed by famed filmmaker Michel Gondry, brought them into heavy rotation on MTV. Stardust eventually signed with Virgin Records, who offered Bangalter $3 million to record the group’s debut album. The offer was declined and all three members moved on with their individual careers.
