Souljahz
Siblings Rachel Washington, Joshu'a Washington, and Je'Kob Washington became Souljahz after blending the concept of being soldiers for Christ with Jah, the Hebrew word for God. In the mid-'90s, the trio began to perform its upbeat blend of hip-hop, urban soul, and pop at churches throughout its native San Diego. Showcases, strong word of mouth, and a self-produced 1999 CD led to a deal with Warner Bros., who released the group's proper debut in August 2002. The Fault Is History showcased the group's easygoing rap and vocal style and positive message over slick hip-hop beats and radio-friendly dance-pop. It was hit in gospel and CCM circles, garnering Dove awards for Best Urban Album of the Year and Best Rap/Hip-Hop/Dance Recorded Song of the Year for "All Around the World."
