Available languages: EnglishNils Landgren is a prolific session player and by his own reckoning has played on more than 500 recordings. His talents are in demand world wide and his distinctively funky trombone playing has featured on albums recorded by major performing acts such as ABBA, The Crusadrers, Wyclef Jean and Herbie Hancock.
Landgren studied classical trombone at Karlstad Music College in his native Sweden before moving on to higher studies at Arvika University. There he met two people who became pivotal in his future development: jazz trombonist Eje Thelin and Swedish folk-jazz pioneer Bengt-Arne Wallin. Both men were in the vanguard of the growing Swedish jazz movement and their influence persuaded Landgren to move from the classical format and begin to experiment with improvisation. After college Langdren turned professional and joined Blue Swede, a Swedish rock band who had a brief number one in the US. Langdren later joined US jazz trumpeter Thad Jones and played in Jones' big band. In 1983 Langdren began his solo career with the release of his album 'Planet Rock'.
In addition to his trombone playing Landgren is also an accomplished singer, actor and dancer and has appeared in over 350 performances of the famous Swedish play 'SKAL' as well as numerous TV films.

4 wheel-drives may cause pollution, but they go fast! Nils Landgren was keenly aware of this power when he decided to name his album 4 Wheel Drive. Alongside him, the record’s three other wheels are Michael Wollny (piano), Lars Danielsson (bass) and Wolfgang Haffner (drums). These musicians, who are some of the driving forces of today’s European jazz, play with impressive unity under the leadership of a charismatic yet never despotic leader, Swedish Nils Landgren, who plays trombone (and sings). They revisit hits of 4 major pop artists, Paul McCartney, Billy Joel, Phil Collins and Sting, whose songs comprise eight out of the twelve tracks on the record, choosing a fan-friendly repertoire while always adding a distinctive twist. These songs’ melodic strength in today’s collective unconscious is never weakening the band’s inspired improvisations. Even Landgren’s intimate and delicate vocals bring an innovative light. © Clotilde Maréchal/Qobuz

When two old friends are reminiscing, talking to each other, laughing or crying together, talking about the past as if it were yesterday, solidifying an already airtight relationship, a listener can sometimes feel awkward, as if they are interfering... yet this is far from the case on Kristallen. The Swedish Nils Landgren/Jan Lundgren duo even goes out of its way to share this intimacy with the listener. This relaxed ‘chamber’ jazz that the trombonist-singer and pianist carve out on this superb duo album does a lot to build bridges between various places and times. Swedish folklore (the traditional Hornlåtar and Värmlandsvisan) features alongside the Great American Songbook (The Nearest of You and Didn’t We) and even The Beatles (I Will and Norwegian Wood). A milestone volume in which Jan Lundgren pays homage to two of his essential pianists with covers of Country by Keith Jarrett and Abdullah Ibrahim’s The Wedding. A Scandinavian hour full of controlled but nonetheless emotional music illuminating with originality a certain tradition of American jazz. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
