Deem Spencer

Queens-based rapper Deem Spencer delivers bracingly personal lyrics in a style that's understated and romantic. His lush instrumentals walk the line between lovelorn R&B and classic hip-hop, creating soft atmospheres to hold his uncommonly gentle approach to rap. Among Spencer's releases are the 2019 album Pretty Face, the 2021 mixtape Deem's Tape, and the varied 2023 full-length adultSW!M, on which his rhymes remained deeply considered whether laid atop raw bass drums, light hand percussion, or breezy soft rock backdrops. Spencer grew up in the Jamaica, Queens area of New York and started rapping when he was in high school in hopes of impressing a love interest. The romantic angle of his musical beginnings would factor into his future creative output, starting with his first publicly shared EP, 2016's Sunflower. The six-track EP explored jazzy samples, futuristic beat-making, and Spencer's dreamily fluid lyrical presentation. The next year he released second EP We Think We Alone, and in 2019 he offered up his first full-length project, the 12-track mixtape Pretty Face. Melancholic and slightly lovesick, the song titles of the album strung together form the sentence "Really, I been tryna tell shorty how beautiful shorty is to me but shorty not tryna hear it from me." Pretty Face met positive critical reception and Spencer played several shows to promote the album's release. In 2021, he released Deem's Tape, a continuation of his soft-edged and futuristic rap/R&B hybrid. Deem's Tape included guest contributions from Okay Kaya and Mel Hines. Spencer's sound alternated between rawer and richer on adultSW!M, a 2023 release led by the casually bopping "To Have It All" and collaborations with the likes of DRAM and Mavi.
