London in the 1730s. Musical life was flourishing around the figure of Handel. The Saxon composer also served as director; at the height of his fame, he surrounded himself with the finest London musicians, and was joined by many foreign composers to occupy the long breaks between the acts of his lyric works. Their musical interludes accompanied lavish dinners, during which Mr Handel escaped from the pit to indulge his gourmet tendencies. Quite a programme! © harmonia mundi

Five years after their celebrated Dresden Album, Johannes Pramsohler and his colleagues of Ensemble Diderot continue their journey exploring the trio sonata in baroque Europe with a programme dedicated to works from Purcell’s London. Through a combination of well-known works and world premieres they show how English composers used the new Italian form as a vehicle for their creative output and how easily foreign composers picked up the English idiom to create chamber music that could hardly be more profound and expressive. © Audax

The regime of Queen Elizabeth I dealt harshly with supporters of the old Catholic religion. Torn between obedience and conscience, some of England’s most talented musicians – Philips, Dering and Dowland – chose a life of exile abroad. Others chose to remain in spiritual isolation in England, comparing themselves to the exiled Israelites in Babylon. Amongst them were Robert White, whose five-part Lamentations are one of the glories of English music of any age, and William Byrd, whose anguished Catholic music is referenced in Shakespeare’s enigmatic poem The Phoenix and the Turtle, vividly set by Huw Watkins especially for stile antico. © harmonia mundi

The Haydn series continues with the Paris Symphony No. 87. Julien Chauvin and his orchestra keep shaking us up with historical instruments listening to Haydn’s works and several other forgotten scores from the same period. All of them were commissioned for the Concert de la Loge Olympique - ancestor and model for Julien Chauvin and his musicians – and all of them sank into oblivion during the 19th century, except for Haydn’s symphonies. The record offers an opportunity to experience some rare works of Grétry, Lemoyne and Ragué, and to revive the success that they once knew. © Aparté

With both of their lives cut short before they reached forty years of age, one from tuberculosis and the other from syphilis, the piano sonatas that Weber and Schubert left behind have either long been forgotten or are unheard of among pianists and the public. Luckily, this has been rectified for Schubert’s works thanks to pioneering pianists such as Artur Schnabel and Wilhelm Kempff, but more must be done for the works of Carl Maria von Weber who is still primarily known for his opera Der Freischütz (The Marksman). It takes an exceptional musician to bring forgotten music back to life and that is exactly what Paul Lewis does in this new album after having previously released fantastic interpretations of Beethoven and Schubert under the same French record label, Harmonia Mundi. Weber was around at the same time as Beethoven and was one of the first piano virtuosos from the beginning of the 19th century. His dazzling technique can be heard in this Sonata No.2 in A flat major which is both a virtuosic and a classic work that opened the door to romanticism for many other composers thereafter. The Sonata in B major, D 575 is actually from the same year that Schubert celebrated his twentieth birthday and sought independence from his parents to become a prolific composer, despite all the risks that came with a career as an independent artist at that time. This captures the beginning of romanticism and is an original and exciting pairing between two composers who appreciated each other’s work, but whose styles were diametrically opposed: the bright lights and panache for Weber and the melancholy soul for Schubert. © François Hudry/Qobuz

We are standing in a picture gallery of music. All around us we can hear snippets of the great works for string quartets, along with unfamiliar things to delight the ear; it is truly a music-lover’s paradise. "Chiaroscuro" forms the conclusion of a rather special trilogy of albums by the Schumann Quartet and at the same time marks a journey’s end. After the quartet searched their own roots with their first album "Landscapes" and engaged with their namesake Robert Schumann on the follow-up album "Intermezzo", they are now completing their journey with the new album "Chiaroscuro". As of today there is a second foretaste of the upcoming album: Shostakovich's "Elegy" from string quartet 15. The piece can be heard from today on all common platforms. © Berlin Classics

In the torment and the great human disorder of the Second World War, millions of children, women and men perished in death camps, killed by the barbary of man. Amongst them, three musicians: Pavel Haas, Hans Krása and Erwin Schulhoff. They were Jewish, they were also intellectuals, modernist, communist or homosexual, and all three of them extraordinary musicians. A double and terrible injustice as, assassinated in their youth, they were also deprived of posthumous glory, history having retained their status as victims, rather than that of composers. This recording pays homage to the music of these "Three brothers of the storm", full of sensuality, colours and life. © Klarthe

With the shadow of the Second World War hanging over a fractured Europe, revolutionary musical change was taking place, nowhere more so than in Paris in 1945. At first glance, combining Boulez, Dutilleux and Messiaen in a single programme may seem an uneasy balance, given the tensions between them, in-light of their divergent compositional paths. Nevertheless a great deal of mutual respect and admiration existed between them as they each established themselves as major creative forces. Boulez remained very attached to his former teacher Messiaen, and in his role as a conductor has done much to champion the latter’s music. Dutilleux also revered Messiaen as both a good friend and a musician, and has also praised much of Boulez’s work. It is in this context that this album seeks to illuminate their intriguing development across the second half of the century, by placing major works from each composer alongside shorter sketches. © Rubicon

Founded in 2007, the Schumann Quartett (not to be confused with the Schumann Quartet made up of Christian Favre, piano, Tedi Papavrami, violin, Dorin Matea, viola and François Guye, cello) first studied with the Alban Berg Quartet, and then in Madrid with Günter Pichler. It's a story of three brothers, Erik, Ken and Mark Schumann who were born in Cologne to German, Romanian and Japanese parents, and who were joined by viola player Liisa Randalu. The career of this young ensemble got off to a flying start after they took first prize at the Bordeaux international string quartet competition. Taking full advantage of the esteem of great old artists, they also play chamber music with Menahem Pressler and Sabine Meyer. This third album is dedicated to Robert Schumann and takes the roads less travelled: such as a forceful and energetic version of the First Quartet as well as the Quartet Op. 12 (with its famous Canzonetta) by Mendelssohn, but also the Adagio zum Gedenken an Robert Schumann ("Adagio in memory of Robert Schumann") written in 2006 by Aribert Reimann, for the big festival in Düsseldorf that marked 150 years since the composer's death. Based on a Bach chorale that Schumann was in the process of harmonising for four players when he died in a psychiatric hospital near Bonn, this brief homage uses a modern-day language with quarter-tones and heart-rending dissonances which could well have come from Schumann's distempered mind. Aribert Reimann's instrumentation of the 6 Gesänge Op. 107 ("Six Songs") for soprano (the candid and moving Anna-Luisa Richter) and string quartet is a great find. © François Hudry/Qobuz
