Annu Malik
Anwar Sardar Malik (November 2, 1960), professionally known as Anu Malik, is an award-winning Indian film composer, arranger, and playback singer. The son of director Sardar Malik, he was born in Bombay and quickly followed his father’s footsteps by writing original music for the film Hunterwali 77 in 1977 under the name Annu Malik. Even though the soundtrack failed to make a splash in the Bollywood film scene, it was the first of many collaborations with playback singer Asha Boshole. After participating in a series of box office failures, he finally made a breakthrough on Tony Juneja’s Aasmaan (1984), receiving a nomination for Best Music Director at the Filmfare Awards. In 1987, Anu Malik made his debut as a singer with the track “Julie Julie,” included in the action film Jeete Hain Shaan Se. The song enjoyed great popularity in India but Anu Malik had yet to find his footing in an industry dominated by composers like R.D. Burman, Kalyanji-Anandji, and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. It was during the 90s and early aughts that he would finally hit his stride with projects such as Baazigar (1993), Refugee (2001), and Main Hoon Na (2004), all of which earned him victories at the annual Filmfare Awards. Despite a slight decline in popularity in subsequent years, Anu Malik officiated as a judge on several music reality shows and contributed original material to the films Kambakkht Ishq (2009), Yamla Pagla Deewana (2011), Shootout at Wadala (2013), Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015), Begum Jaan (2017), and Sui Dhaaga (2018). In 2021, his song “Barsaat Ki Dhun,” originally written for the soundtrack of the film Sir (1993), was covered by pop singer Jubin Nautiyal, reaching Number 21 on the Indian Top 100.
