Selena Gomez & the Scenes derde album in drie jaar tijd heet When the Sun Goes Down (2011) en vertoont geen tekenen van kwaliteitsverlies als gevolg van de snelle oplevering zo snel achter elkaar. De nummers zijn pittiger, lichter en leuker. Haar vocalen zijn meer begeesterd, en de arrangementen zijn minder afhankelijk van zware synths. Over het algemeen zit er ook een speelser gevoel door het album. Ze baant zich op bruisende wijze een weg door dansvriendelijke tracks als “Bang Bang Bang” en “That’s More Like It”, gloeit een beetje op haar duet met Pixie Lott “We Own the Night” en “Middle of Nowhere”, en komt als een overtuigende discodiva over op “Hit the Lights.”
