Brooklyn rapper Navy Blue comes into his own on Ways of Knowing, his first album for Def Jam and one where the foggy production of his earlier work lifts almost completely, elucidating deep perspectives on family and the cycle of life. The tonality of Ways of Knowing is gentle and steady, starting with mellow gospel funk on tracks like "The Medium" and the gorgeous Kelly Moonstone-assisted "Window to the Soul," and working in a reggae sample on the Budgie-produced instrumental of album standout "To Fall in Love." The lyrics are introspective and metered, returning to themes of family and knowledge passed between generations on almost every track. Where Navy Blue's sound was once blurry, these 13 songs are clear and ambitious while all consistently of a piece. Even the jazzy ambling of "Embers" flows nicely into the radiant R&B glow of the electric piano-led "Pillars," and throughout the album the beats tend to be more heavenly than banging, regardless of their genre inclinations. Ways of Knowing is cut from the same dreamer's cloth as Navy Blue's most impressive work, but a newfound lucidity makes it his most vivid and emotionally connective material to date.
