A pillar of The Dap-Kings, the house band of the swinging American label Daptones, who went down in history for accompanying Amy Winehouse on the historic Back to Black album, Cochemea returns here after the remarkable All My Relations, with the second installation in his quest to get in touch with his native roots. Baca Sewa is the original Apache family name of this saxophonist, flautist, composer and musicologist of Mexican origin. Deep-sounding drums lead the dance, sometimes joined by vocal incantations (Nahsuareo Bwikam or Curandera) which seem to be dialogues with the spirits and the ancestors, or sometimes there is just a solemn bass. Cochemea lays down the inspired breath of his horns, and interrogates the natural elements and the history of this land so violently confiscated by the Spanish conquistadors, and works to restore an idea of sharing. Drawing on his jazz and funk training but inventing a personal language, he displays a sincere lyricism, sometimes tormented by questions (Curandera), sometimes dreaming (Peace Prayer) and sometimes more optimistic (Baca Sewa (Song)).That latter ancestral song closes this gripping mystical quest. © Benjamin MiNiMuM/Qobuz
