Based in Oslo and very active since 2020 (most notably with the Ladybirth Orchestra whose first album Fly was released in 2021), the young Norwegian pianist and composer Liv Andrea Hauge is one of the most promising musicians on the new Scandinavian jazz scene. After coming out with a debut album of her own last year at the head of her septet, the Liv Andrea Hauge Ensemble (Hva na Ekko), which references both avant-garde jazz as well as new styles coming out of Western music traditions, on this record, she definitively steps into her growing reputation by releasing Ville Blomster (Wild Flowers) under the label Hubro. It’s the first real album from her trio composed of Georgia Wartel Cllins on bass and August Glännestrand on drums (Live from St. Hanshaugen, released last year and announcing the birth of the group, had been recorded in the pianist’s living room barely a week prior to the group’s formation).

With a minimalist and profoundly intimate aesthetic, typical of a certain melancholic sensibility that often characterizes Scandinavian jazz, the trio have a refined sense of space and the dynamics of silence that they’ve used to develop short, purposefully simple pieces with great melodic seductiveness. Alternating between lively tracks with a true rhythmic lightness that follow in the footsteps of Keith Jarrett’s 70s lyrical jazz folk, beautifully sentimental impressionistic ballads, and more abstract sequences that evoke free improvisation, Liv Andrea Hauge and her comrades, with this perfectly-commanded record, present an exceptionally coherent panorama of an imaginative sonoric universe with great poetic power. © Stéphane Ollivier/Qobuz
