The print in the graphics stating this could stand to be a bit larger, but this is a new version of Verdi's Requiem for two pianos, organ, and percussion, not the usual orchestral score. Arranger Richard Blackford doesn't sound 100 percent confident about his task, stating that he found more and more ways of capturing the contents as he went along and that "reassuringly few" notes in the original had to be omitted, but the fact is that he did his job well. His root method is to deploy the two pianos in the string writing and the organ, which here is capable of many timbres, for the rest of the orchestra. There are some divergences from this, of course, and his setting is lively, with percussionist Peter Fry having his hands full. Sample one of the big movements, such as the Dies irae, for an idea of the sound, with the pianos doing double duty by adding a second percussive element. This arrangement will certainly be a boon to choirs that want to sing the Requiem but lack the resources, and the performance here, from the Bach Choir under longtime conductor David Hill, somehow fits the populist mood; it is a sizable ensemble that matches the splashy sound of the instrumentation where a choir closer to the cathedral tradition might not have. The soloists are uniformly excellent, and Nimbus contributes ideal sound from Holy Trinity Church in Sloane Square, London. This is satisfying to hear, even beyond the usefulness of the arrangement.
