In 2011 bracht Abel Tesfaye, beter bekend als The Weeknd, drie gratis mixtapes uit, House of Balloons, Thursday, en Echoes of Silence. Op Trilogy zijn ze verzameld met remastered geluid en drie nieuwe nummers toegevoegd. Tesfaye drukt onbeschaamd smerige gevoelens uit over drugs, feesten, drugs, slechte meisjes, drugs, strippers, drugs, goede meisjes die slecht worden, en drugs – allemaal hebben ze hetzelfde doel en krijgen ze dezelfde hoeveelheid aandacht. Er zijn momenten op deze nummers waarop Tesfaye opmerkelijk aangrijpend klinkt, met dodelijke hooks en op een of andere manier zingend alsof zijn leven er van afhangt ondanks het koude bloed dat door zijn aderen stroomt. Toen dit pakket werd uitgebracht, was hij mainstream momentum aan het vergaren met verschijningen op Drake’s “Crew Love” en Wiz Khalifa’s “Remember You.” Zijn potentie is net zo duidelijk als zijn teksten giftig zijn.
