In February 2014 Amsterdam Sinfoniettaand Thomas Hampson made a tour of twelveEuropean concert halls performing a uniqueprogramme.The heart of the programmeconsistedof new arrangements of songs byJohannes Brahms, Franz Schubert and HugoWolf. Amsterdam Sinfonietta commissionedthe English composerDavid Matthews toarrange this song repertoire for string ensembleand baritone. These intimate compositionswere performed in this new version for thefirst time in large-scale concert halls. The practice of orchestrating older, preexistingsongs became the vogue in thenineteenth century, coinciding with theblossomingof a whole new genre; theorchestral song. Composers such as Mahler,Wolf, Berlioz, Liszt and Strauss wrote songs forpiano and voice, which they later ‘emancipated’by arranging them for voice andorchestra. A number of composers,includingBrahms, Berlioz and later Weber and Reger,paid homage to their predecessorssuch asSchubert and Schumann by orchestrating theirsongs. On this recordingonly the version ofSamuel Barber’s song Dover Beach remainsclose to the original. Composed for stringquartet and baritone, the song is heard herein an arrangementfor baritone and stringorchestra
