Davie Bowie maakt met The Next Day een onverwachte terugkeer uit zijn een onofficiële pensioen, het is zijn eerste album sinds Reality (2003). Wederom werkt Bowie hier met producer Tony Visconti – de man die aan het roer stond van vele Bowie klassiekers uit de jaren 70, en de twee studioalbums aan het begin van de jaren 2000 – en dit is niet het enige bekende gezicht, met gitarist Earl Slick als meest vooraanstaand van alle terugkerende muzikanten. De eerste single, “Where Are We Now,” is een stemmige overpeinzing ten aanzien van Bowies baanbrekende tijd in Berlijn in de jaren 70, maar de rest van het album is luider en taaier, een van de vele verassingen die The Next Day in petto heeft.
