The Sci-Fi volume of Naxos' Classics at the Movies series delivers a mixture of themes and material written specifically for film, and existing classical pieces used in particular movies. In addition to John Williams' memorable Star Wars theme music, he is represented by the jazzy "Cantina Band" and loping, inquisitive "Parade of the Ewoks." Jerry Goldsmith's Alien theme is a standout; while it illustrates the cold grip and vastness of space, it also embodies hope and beauty. Strauss' inevitable (yet no less powerful) "Also Sprach Zarathustra" begins the set here, which is rounded out by music from Beethoven, Rachmaninov, and Mozart from such films as The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Somewhere in Time.
