The symphonies of Shostakovich span a lifetime's worth of experiences, from the experimentation of youth through the despair of war, life under the suspicious eye of the state, and the impending mortality that comes with age. The recordings collected and offered here by BIS cover Mark Wigglesworth's growth as a conductor with two very capable orchestras, the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic. These recordings have been released previously on the BIS label, beginning in 1996 with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales' performance of the Seventh Symphony ("Leningrad") and concluding in 2010 with the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic's Second ("To October") and Third ("The First of May"). The BBC National Orchestra of Wales struggles at times in its performances, but overall, it is up to the task. The Netherlands Radio Philharmonic is cleaner in its readings, displaying the orchestra's proficiency in handling the challenges of these often disparate compositions. Throughout this survey, Wigglesworth displays his knowledge of the scores and why he has earned a reputation as a specialist in the works of Shostakovich. Listeners may prefer renderings offered by Russian orchestras and conductors (the Moscow Philharmonic under Kondrashin or the Leningrad Philharmonic under Mravinsky, for example), but these are commendable performances, proving Wigglesworth as a solid technical Shostakovich interpreter. BIS' engineers have cleaned up some of the sound issues from the early recordings and offer a cohesive, vibrant sound.
