The ORA Singers and their director, Suzi Digby, have devised several interesting programs mixing Renaissance works with newly commissioned compositions. Sanctissima takes their efforts to a new level. The album's subtitle is "Vespers and Benediction for the Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary," and Digby terms the program "not a reconstruction of a historical event as such" (for a half dozen of the pieces are new) but "a fantasy construction of a Vespers and Benediction service that might be performed in honour of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary." This is something new and different; various recordings of early religious music have sought to re-create the musical order of a liturgy, but the mix of pieces from chant to new music may be unique. There is a lot of chant here, with the polyphonic pieces taking off from the chant in some way as they would have in the Renaissance. Digby takes the chants at a brisk clip that may be a bit disconcerting if they're heard individually, but that does keep the momentum level high. The new works fit nicely with the program as a whole. They are not in the collegiate neo-Renaissance mold (hear the slightly jazzy Assumpta est Maria by David Bednall), but also not unrelated to the general mood. The shimmering tone clusters of Sven-David Sandström, the only non-Briton in the bunch, are especially notable. The ORA Singers are, as usual, nearly flawless, and the Renaissance standards from Palestrina, Guerrero, and others have rarely seemed so luminous. Harmonia Mundi contributes excellent sound from St. Augustine's Church, Kilbourn. This album made classical best-seller lists in the summer of 2023, and it richly deserves its place there.
