In 1996, the young pianist Leon McCawley (born in 1973) made his recording debut for Virgin Classics with a programme entirely dedicated to Samuel Barber (1910-1981). This was a rare occurrence, in a time when Barber monographs were as essential as they were barely visible, but in the 1990s, Virgin Classics had fully invested in the field of North American piano or chamber music - see also Peter Lawson's remarkable work on North American sonatas (Carter, Griffes, Ives, etc.).
Leon McCawley's playing stands out here above all by a desire for clarity and a certain lyrical restraint; Barber's lines unfold without haste. An excellent gateway to this universe. Later on, Leon McCawley returned to Barber's piano work for SOMM Recordings, sometimes with more intensity - which shows that he has a real love for it! And despite the indisputable interest in this first Virgin anthology, which is truly essential for all lovers of twentieth-century American music, we can’t really forget the spirit, inspiration, and energy that the brilliant Shura Cherkassky injected in the only Excursions Op. 20 in concert in 1960 (Profil or Orfeo): a unique moment in the history of recorded piano, it must be said! © Pierre-Yves Lascar/Qobuz
