After Tomboy in 2011 and Panda Bear Meets The Grim Reaper in 2015, Noah Lennox (AKA Panda Bear) from the Animal Collective reunites with Spaceman 3’s Peter Kember (AKA Sonic Boom). This album is so much more than a Panda Bear-composed, Sonic Boom-produced album: it’s a true collaboration. These long-time friends, both living in Portugal (Kember joined Lennox there in 2018), revisit some of Kember’s collection of doo-wop and rock’n’roll classics from the 50s and 60s, ranging from Eddie Cochran to the famous blues duo Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman. As the name suggests, this album has pushed the reset button so it can start from scratch. To get the ball rolling, Kember began isolating the first few notes each song, sampling them and looping them. Lennox then wrote the accompanying melodies.

All nine tracks are in perfect balance - flawless, without pretence, exaggeration or outdated sounds. There’s something old and familiar about them, yet they still feel strangely fresh. ‘Gettin’ To The Point’ exhibits the same sort of avant-garde experimentation that defined Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion era (2009), mingled with Cochran’s 50s-style rock’n’roll. However, behind the vintage surf rock vibe (which the synths and software effects sometimes obscure or launch into spacey territories), the lyrics evoke a world in the throes of collapse. "We were trying to do something that’s sort of nostalgic for a past that never existed and a future that never will exist," Kember succinctly explains. The result is an ambiguous album that possesses a beauty as dangerous as it is mystical, underpinned by a concept which plays around with time and space in a way that’s terrifying and thrilling all at once. © Charlotte Saintoin/Qobuz
