Recorded at a public performance in Berkeley in April, this opera-ballet Temple de la gloire by Rameau, based on a libretto written by none other than Voltaire himself, is a discographic world first, for this version, at least. First performed on 25 November 1745 in Versailles at the Théâtre de la Grande-Écurie to celebrate the victory at Fontenoy, the work was then put on again at the Paris Opéra, but this time in a revised version which was, until today, the only known score. But then this original Versailles version, which had been thought lost, resurfaced at the Music Library of the University of California Berkeley, along with a copy of the libretto written for the performances at Versailles. Here we see a faithful reconstruction of a spectacle that brought together two of the greatest men of their times, Voltaire and Rameau, and the glory of Louis XV – who was also present, but it seems that he didn't much appreciate the homage. Voltaire, always mischievous, didn't hesitate to turn entertainment into agitation: the great king triumphs, of course, sword in hand: but rather than going off to war, he would have done better to look after the welfare of his people. This sumptuous production, co-produced by the Philharmonia Baroque Ensemble (based in California) and the Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles, conducted by the erudite Nicholas McGegan, brings together a superb, majority-French cast, which is cause for celebration. This is a whole new Rameau, full of melodic invention and harmonic daring, which needs to be discovered post-haste. © SM/Qobuz
