Another recording from Pavarotti's Modena series of annual concerts benefiting children of a given location. This one had proceeds going to Cambodia and Tibet. A multitude of pop stars (both American-European and purely Italian) showed up for the effort. As with other installments of the series, the major problem that arises is that Pavarotti is not the most adept at singing pop tunes, and conversely, folks like Savage Garden aren't given to singing more classical tunes that well. One notable exception would be Enrique Iglesias' assist in "Cielito Lindo," admittedly not exactly classical, but given the orchestration that was added in, it became a tour de force for both Pavarotti and Iglesias. If you're looking for star-studded charity albums, there are certainly better ones to find elsewhere. Nonetheless, given the obvious rift in styles present, this isn't a horrible piece of attempted crossover music. Also, various works done solely by one of the artists tend to be decently well-done (Tracy Chapman's contribution in particular). The tendency with the duets is to have the non-classical artist perform for a bit, then allow Pavarotti to boldly smash in with booming vocals and destroy what pop there was (or allow the pop artists to timidly join in on a classical tune nearly unnoticed). Pick it up to support the cause, but perhaps not to support the music.
