Whoever says Viardot normally means Pauline – the other members of the family became famous under other names, like father Manuel Garcia or sister Maria Malibran. But that is to forget that Pauline gave birth to Paul (1857-1941), who is presented here, alongside his mother's Six Pieces written in 1868 – precisely for her son Paul – with a wide selection of works written between 1890 and 1930. Yes, Pauline Viardot's Six Morceaux surely still bear the traces of Mendelssohn and Chopin, but they develop a harmony with such a personal flavour and an excess of surprises and striking, charming ruptures. On the other hand, the earlier music by Paul (who enjoyed an intense career as a global star violinist) shows en and of era influence – Introduction et Caprice from 1890 – and the mark of the new century "of the salons" in the later works, but none at all of the imprint of the interwar period for later works like the Trois Petites pièces of 1929, whose language remains firmly anchored in the world of three or four decades earlier. Saint-Saëns, a friend of the Viardot family, Franck, his teacher, Fauré who nearly became his brother in law: these are the foundations of the writing of Paul Viardot, up to the end of his life, when he avoided all modernist currents, remaining resolutely in his teachers' very French fold. That doesn't mean that these aren't delicacies very much worthy of discovery, played here by violinist Reto Kuppel, who was for a long time the first solo violin in the Bavarian Radio Orchestra, accompanied on the piano by Wolfgang Manz, winner of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. © SM/Qobuz
