In 2015, Nadia Reid proved that New Zealand was more than just the All Blacks and kiwis. At only 23 years old, the singer brought together neo-folk with rock and even country music on her first album Listen to Formation, Look for the Signs, with influences from Laura Marling, Jolie Holland and Sharon Van Etten. It was a time when her fellow countrymen Aldous Harding and Marlon Williams were also taking the plunge outside of their home nation. Five years later and Nadia Reid’s universe has expanded, largely thanks to the Spacebomb Records duo Trey Pollard and Matthew E. White, experts in meticulous arrangements and risky instrumentation. Also thanks to tours that have taken her around the world, she has made an album that is reminiscent of an incredible journey, hence the name of this third album, Out of My Province. Reid has never been clearer than she is on certain tracks such as Oh Canada, an ode to the birthplace of one of her idols Joni Mitchell. Best Thing best exemplifies the way in which Reid can do small-scale intimate and soaring sound on the same song, starting with a simple acoustic guitar and ending with an ocean of violins. Over the course of this magnificent album, Nadia Reid sings with the same charisma and depth that those twice her age demonstrate. It’s as if the entire world were at her feet. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
